October 2013 - International Peace Day
LIFE School's founding mission is based on the philosophy of Dr. Robert Muller, former Assistant General of the United Nations, and an important advocate of peace education. In the 2013-2014, we decided to revive the observation of International Peace Day, which is usually celebrated on September 21st, 2013, only a few days after school starts!
For the sake of time and organization, this year we celebrated International Peace Day on October 13th. LIFE School students, parents and teachers created over 1,000 peace cranes based on the tradition of Sadako Sasaki, a tragic young victim of the 1945 atomic bomb in Hiroshima. Before her death, Sadako vowed to make 1,000 origami cranes, an undertaking she couldn't complete. Her friends and family helped to fulfill her wish.
Today schools around the world participate in International Peace Day with the elaboration of paper cranes, an act that reminds us of the fragility of life and the necessity for peace.
